It is with a heavy heart that I am cancelling the 2020 Memorial Day event, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This event would have been the 24th consecutive year in Springboro to honor our brave young men and women who have served in the military for our great country. In addition, our first responders are always honored in that same vain for what they do each and everyday for all of us!! During these challenging times I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the doctors , nurses , hospital workers, grocery store workers, suppliers, and other facilities who make masks, ventilators, etc.
My rationale for cancelling the event is mainly due to the schools being such an important part of the event. We eat in the Springboro Intermediate school cafeteria after the parade and event. The high school marching band and ROTC are also not available due to school being closed. There is no easy way to talk to, and personally thank our sponsors due to most businesses being closed. We do not feel it is prudent to have an event just to have one, even if the state permits. Last, but surely not least, is the safety of all the residents in our Springboro community. The Governor’s stay at home order is in place until May 1st at the earliest. I see us opening in phases and easing of social distancing requirements will not happen immediately. We are all anxious to get back to our normal lives, but there is just too much at stake to rush into an event such as this. Hopefully we will have the ability to hold our concerts in the park and other events, but time will tell. We will keep you posted on any updates through all of our social media tools, e-newsletter and City website. In the meantime, stay safe and stay strong. #stayconnectedspringboro
